Global Perspectives is an integrated academic five credit program which has a strong focus on self-exploration and global issues. The program takes place each year during the second semester in portable 11. Global Perspectives consists of five credits- Grade 11 English, Art, Spirituality, History, and Grade 12 World Issues. All five classes are spent together as a Global family, learning and experiencing the highs that the program has to offer. The other part of program allows students travel to such countries as Cuba and Germany as part of international exchanges.
To the students in Global, the program is worth so much more than the five credits earned. It offers many experiences that are a once in a lifetime opportunity. The program offers many life lessons the students can take with them through the rest of their life. The program also offers the chance for students to become a family and create long-lasting friendships with the other students in the class as they deal with all the projects and timeliness that Global brings.
The integration aspect of Global is unique to the program and allows students to experience a different type of high school learning, similar to being back in elementary school. The integration allows for many interesting and challenging projects like Colony to Nationhood, the Shaman and our first project: the out of the box presentation. These projects allow students to be creative and express themselves, and it allows the students to develop better relationships with their peers.
Before the students get on the plane to go to Germany, a lot of work must be done. The Global students experience probably the largest workload they will ever get, but it is all worth the several sleepless nights and restless days as the trips are truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The two large trips the students go on are to Germany and Cuba. About two months into the program the Global family takes their first international adventure together and travels to Cuba to become fully immersed in the Cuban culture. This is an experience the students will never forget as they get to experience Cuba with their Cuban partners and along the way develop better friendships with their friendships with their peers. The second and most anticipated trip is to Germany. This is thought as the “finish line” of the program, yet is the beginning of a new cultural experience. The students travel to Germany to stay with their exchange partner for a month. During this time they travel and learn about the german and other european histories and cultures. Experiences like Germany and Cuba are what the program is about.
Overall, Global is a roller coaster of crazy projects with twists and turns at every corner. It is truly an amazing experience; how could one ever forget it? Notably, without the help of the four amazing teachers, such experience would not be the same.
If you have any doubts about joining the Global Perspectives program… think again! The Global family will change your life!
